Russell Martin’s name emerges as four managers now touted for West Brom job

West Brom are looking for a new manager ahead of the summer transfer window after the sacking of Tony Mowbray.

Mowbray’s tenure was a disappointing one and after a defeat against Derby County killed all hopes of a play-off campaign, Shilen Patel took no time in making the call to sack the boss.

Although Patel has some credit in the bank in the Black Country, there is pressure to get the next appointment right in the hope that the Baggies can keep pushing until the end, next season.

West Brom forming managerial shortlist

West Brom know what it takes to compete at the right end of the Championship, although Carlos Corberan’s departure midway through the season rocked the boat.

There are a number of changes needed at The Hawthorns in the summer transfer window, but the key addition first is to find the right manager.

Patel will have no doubts over the aims for next season being a play-off campaign, with eyes on promotion once more.

However, having the right manager from the outset is vital as it allows transfers to reflect the boss and his own style of play, as well as allowing Albion to get going in the way that they wish to go on.

With that in mind, the chief will be eager to take his time with this appointment, ensuring it is the right fit for the Baggies.

Russell Martin is the latest name to emerge on that list with the Football League Paper (27 April, back page) suggesting the manager, who is also linked with the Norwich City job, could be an option in the Black Country.

The report states that he would be joining a list comprising Ryan Mason, Gary O’Neil and Steve Cooper to make up the current shortlist for the vacancy.

Patel has to consider what he wants

Martin has become well-known for the way he plays football, with his style pleasing to the eye. This would certainly be more like the tenure of Corberan than Mowbray and give supporters something to enjoy.

That being said, it could be a short-sighted view from the West Brom chief if he is keen to see his side get promoted next season.

Martin has proven that he struggles in the Premier League and therefore, even if he did achieve his aims, it would leave Patel with questions about whether he could be the man to take them forward.

On the other hand, the chairman could decide that it is better to focus on the current battle that lies ahead and worry about what comes next later down the line.

There is plenty to be pondered at The Hawthorns but the pressure is on at West Brom to get this appointment correct in order to set up ready for a strong campaign ahead.
