Darren Moore name thrown in frame for West Brom job after what’s happened

West Brom are in the process of seeking for a new manager after Tony Mowbray was sacked at The Hawthorns.

Mowbray struggled to continue the good work that was done by Carlos Corberan, and when the Baggies fell out of the race for the play-offs, Shilen Patel wasted no time in sacking the boss.

Ahead of the new season, Albion will have to settle on a new boss, giving them the opportunity to shape the side as they want, ready for next term.

Darren Moore named in West Brom manager search

Although the appointment of Mowbray was a considered one, as a boss who was different from his predecessor, it failed to translate to success on the football pitch.

In this sense, the pressure if off as the Baggies don’t need to try and form a continuation and instead, a new boss will have the opportunity to shape things the way they want.

Nevertheless, Patel has to make sure this appointment is the right one as West Brom have to get started as they mean to go on, with eyes on the play-offs once more.

Discussing the managerial situation on The Liquidator Podcast (27 April), Chris Lepkowski brought up a familiar name in Darren Moore before admitting he doesn’t see it happening.

However, Adrian Goldberg suggested it might be one worth considering as he replied: “Darren Moore has got two promotions, let’s not forget, and he had that incredible promotion at Sheffield Wednesday.

“You may remember, at Sheffield Wednesday they lost the first leg of a play-off 4-0 and Darren Moore inspired Sheffield Wednesday to come back from a play-off defeat in a first leg to get through and win and eventually succeed and get promotion.

“So he’s got promotion to the Championship with Sheffield Wednesday and he was then dismissed by Chansiri. I think I know whose side I’d take in that dispute any day of the week. Then Port Vale, he’s taken up to League One.”

West Brom to look forward

As Goldberg says, Moore has done excellently since his departure from West Brom and is well deserving of promotion with Port Vale this season.

TeamWin Rate
West Brom47.92%
Doncaster Rovers44.87%
Sheffield Wednesday51.16%
Huddersfield Town13.04%
Port Vale37.68%
Moore’s win rate.

However, it can be very risky to go back to a former boss and he hasn’t done enough away from The Hawthorns to suggest he would be capable of doing the job required in the Black Country.

Mowbray’s second tenure with the Baggies suggested as much and you can imagine the chief would be wary before repeating a move like that.

Patel should be looking towards creating a new era at West Brom instead and needs to bring in someone who is either up and coming, in the way Corberan showed to be, or someone with the proven experience of gaining promotion to the top flight.

There is certainly a decision to be made about what direction the club go in now, but thoughts surely need to be on the future rather than the past.
