West Brom have to beat Birmingham to major free agent signing with 23 G/A

West Brom should be looking to compete with their newly-promoted Midlands rivals Birmingham in the summer transfer window.

The Baggies are going to try and inject some extra quality into the squad during the summer ahead of the 2025/26 Championship campaign.

West Brom were held to a goalless draw on Saturday (26 April), which guaranteed that they will miss out on the playoffs this season, which has been ended in disappointment.

The Midlands giants are now going to be working hard to try and get themselves into that position for next season, and adding some fresh faces to the squad will be crucial in making that happen.

West Brom have to sign Peterborough star Kwame Poku

While the Baggies might have to splash the cash to improve the current squad, there is also a plethora of top free agents set to be available when this season ends.

One of those is going to be Kwame Poku, who will be ending his time at Peterborough United to embark on a fresh challenge next season.

Poku’s attacking quality would immediately improve any team he joins, even though the winger has had a difficult season due to injury, and West Brom should be throwing their name in the hat to bring him in.

He’s the type of player who has a bright future, but is also able to deliver immediately, and that’s what the Baggies need if they want to push for promotion next season.

He’s missed a good portion of the season because of a hamstring problem, but he still boasts 12 goals and eight assists in 26 appearances for the Posh throughout this campaign.

However, West Brom will face competition from Birmingham if they want to sign Poku and bring him to the Hawthorns, as the newly promoted Blues have identified him as a prime target, according to the Football League Paper (p21, 27 April).

West Brom must focus on hiring a new manager

While looking at which players could be available during the summer transfer window is a sensible approach, but the most important next step for the Baggies is to hire a permanent manager.

The Baggies are without a manager at the moment after sacking Tony Mowbray following their poor finish to the season, and now the Championship outfit are on the lookout for their next boss.

Whoever is hired will likely want to be brought in before the summer transfer window opens so that they can have a full influence on the team that’s put together.
