Gerrard issued Lampard advice as he’s told why to take on West Brom job

Steven Gerrard has emerged as a candidate to become West Brom’s next permanent manager.

The Liverpudlian sits alongside the likes of Russell Martin in the betting odds to become Tony Mowbray’s successor at The Hawthorns.

Meanwhile, West Brom were held to a 0-0 draw by Cardiff City in South Wales on Saturday under the stewardship of interim boss James Morrison, a result which ensured the Baggies can no longer land a playoff spot.

The Baggies’ next permanent boss will be tasked with guiding the Black Country outfit to their second top-six finish in three seasons.

Gerrard told to follow Lampard’s example and take West Brom job

Gerrard’s former England teammate Frank Lampard has guided Coventry City to serious playoff contention after taking over from Mark Robins earlier in the season.

David Prutton has now told Football League World (28 April) that Gerrard should follow the Coventry manager’s example.

“Maybe [Gerrard will] have taken heed or inspiration from what Frank Lampard’s experienced at Coventry City, and obviously Derby before that,” Prutton said.

“The Championship is a very smart way to get a decent body of work in to show people what you can do. And West Brom, yes, there might be a bit of turnover of players, take a look at what the ownership are expecting going into next season, but yes, the profile works.

“But, given how ambitious he is, his standards as a player and his ability to infuse and inspire a side, I think West Brom would be quite right looking at Steven Gerrard as a potential candidate.”

West Brom finish season against Luton Town

Interim boss Morrison and the Albion players should be keen to give the Baggies faithful something to cheer about on the last day of the season on Saturday.

West Brom supporters deserve to see the West Midlands club enjoy a positive ending to a campaign which has failed to meet their expectations.

The Baggies’ season has been a turbulent one after former manager and fan favourite Carlos Corberan departed The Hawthorns to join La Liga outfit Valencia.

Corberan has done a stellar job in Spain since leaving the Albion, whereas Mowbray failed to guide the Black Country outfit to the playoff spots.

West Brom will be eager to beat Luton at The Hawthorns this weekend, but it will prove to be a tough task as the Hatters are still vying to achieve Championship survival.

Matt Bloomfield’s men have managed three successive wins, while a victory over the Baggies on Saturday would ensure their second-tier status.
