West Brom new manager favourite changes yet again, ex-Albion midfielder now leads

West Brom are in the process of appointing a new manager, three weeks on from sacking Tony Mowbray.

Mowbray was sacked from his role at The Hawthorns after the Baggies fell out of the play-offs towards the end of the campaign.

Shilen Patel is now looking for a replacement, although is seemingly taking his time over a decision that will play a crucial part in the direction of the club.

James Morrison favourite for West Brom job

The departure of Carlos Corberan from the Black Country at Christmas proved to be a crucial turning point in the Baggies’ season.

Ever since his arrival at The Hawthorns, Mowbray struggled to really get going with his side and results on the pitch were not good enough.

Patel’s decision to part ways with Mowbray during a loss of form served as a clear indicator of the chief’s expectations.

However, the task now is appointing someone who is able to achieve those ambitions and manage the summer transfer budget correctly.

The constantly changing odds over the possible appointments in the Black Country have perhaps been representative of the job that Patel is facing.

Those odds have changed once again, and according to the Bet Victor as of Sunday afternoon (11 May), the favourite is now interim boss James Morrison.

Morrison appointment could be a risk for West Brom

Morrison is, rightfully, a popular figure at The Hawthorns, but that doesn’t mean he would be the right appointment for West Brom at this stage.

The former Baggies midfielder has no previous managerial experience and only oversaw two games after Mowbray’s departure, which isn’t exactly enough to be convincing for the full-time job.

Morrison has not had enough time to prove himself.

Although clubs should always be prepared to take a chance on an up-and-coming boss, when you consider how big Albion’s ambitions are next term, you have to consider whether this would tie in with that.

Morrison could certainly be a manager in the future and oversee a long-term project, but should West Brom achieve their goals of promotion next term, he would suddenly be a Premier League boss after just one season, which doesn’t tie in with long-term success.

There is plenty to be considered by Patel when it comes to his appointment, and clearly going for someone with plenty of experience in Mowbray did not pay off.

However, this move could be one that proves to be a bit too risky and the Black Country outfit may need to keep their eyes firmly on the prize.
