Ruben Selles enters running for West Brom job as odds revealed amid Hull news

Ruben Selles is the latest man to be linked with the vacancy at West Brom.

West Brom have been without a manager since Tony Mowbray was sacked on 21 April after the Baggies’ Championship play-off hopes were ended.

James Morrison finished the campaign in the dugout, and Shilen Patel faces a huge decision on the direction of the Black Country club in the next few weeks.

Selles set to leave Hull City, emerges as a contender at West Brom

Selles is set to be sacked by fellow Championship outfit Hull City after just six months in charge at the MKM Stadium.

A report from BBC Sport (15 May) claims that Tigers owner Acun Ilicali is set to move in a different direction ahead of the new campaign.

That could free up the Spaniard to take the reins at The Hawthorns in a shocking turn of events, with the managerial vacancy still unresolved.

Selles is 12/1 to take over in the West Midlands with BetVictor.

Ryan Mason is the current favourite (5/4), with Morrison (5/2) and Russell Martin (11/4) also contenders for the role.

West Brom can do better than Selles

Selles did a brilliant job stabilising Reading in his time in Berkshire amid significant financial issues. However, he has not had the same impact at Hull.

The Tigers secured survival on the final day of the season after a 1-1 draw with Portsmouth at Fratton Park (3 May), with Selles winning just nine of his 28 matches in charge of Hull, a 32.1 per cent win rate.

That does not make for encouraging reading for Albion supporters. However, the 41-year-old’s high-intensity, attacking brand of football would certainly entertain fans who watched their side struggle to draws that ultimately ended their play-off chances.

With the squad at his disposal in the West Midlands, Selles would likely do a lot better than he has done with Hull, and he proved that he can fight above his means when he finished sixth in League One with Reading despite off-field issues.

The former Southampton boss has experience in the Premier League, albeit taking the Saints down to the second tier, but he deserves to be given a second chance in the division, which could eventually come with the Throstles.
