West Brom make approach to sign left-footed defender on free transfer

West Brom are not waiting until their next manager is finalised to make moves in the transfer market.

The Baggies are guaranteed to make some major changes to their squad after seeing their push to reach the Championship playoffs collapse under Tony Mowbray.

While the hunt for a new manager to replace Mowbray remains ongoing, West Brom are also stepping up efforts to bolster their ranks ahead of next season.

Defence is an area Albion are already looking at strengthening, with Semi Ajayi looking certain to leave when his contract expires, along with Mason Holgate, whose loan deal from Everton is also nearing an end.

West Brom in contact with Gora Diouf

Gora Diouf has now emerged as a surprise target to strengthen West Brom‘s backline this summer transfer window.

The West Midlands outfit have already approached the centre-back to discuss a move to The Hawthorns, according to Africafoot.

The African news outlet reported via their website on Wednesday (14 May) that Albion are particularly interested in signing the 21-year-old on a free transfer.

Diouf is due to leave FC Sion when his contract with the Swiss outfit runs out at the end of the season, as things stand.

However, West Brom are not the only club interested in acquiring the Senegalese’s services, as Trabzonspor and Samsunspor have already made ‘concrete’ offers to sign him.

Diouf is, therefore, at the centre of ‘increasingly intense discussions’ regarding his future.

Meanwhile, all eyes are on Shilen Patel to see who he brings in as the replacement for Mowbray, as West Brom look to mount another promotion push next season.

It was widely thought that Marti Cifuentes would be the man to take the reins at The Hawthorns after he was placed on gardening leave by QPR in the wake of heavy links with the Baggies.

However, John Percy later reported that Cifuentes is not even on Albion’s list of candidates, let alone close to joining them.

Therefore, it now remains to be seen who the owners will appoint to take the club forward.
