Hull City decide on ex-West Brom boss Mowbray as next manager update shared

Hull City are looking for a new manager to replace the outgoing Ruben Selles, despite achieving Championship survival.

The Tigers stayed in the division by the skin of their teeth, with a draw on the final day taking them above Luton Town on goal difference to avoid the drop.

Despite this dramatic feat, the new owners decided to part ways with Selles, who has since been linked with the vacant position at West Brom.

Meanwhile, former Baggies manager Tony Mowbray had been touted to replace the Spanish manager at the seaside club.

Mowbray no longer in contention for Hull

Mowbray’s second stint with the Championship club was short-lived, with the former Middlesbrough defender relieved of his duties three months after his appointment at the turn of the year.

Results did not go his way, with the club reaching their decision after a 3-1 loss to Derby in April all but ended the Baggies’ hopes of reaching the playoffs.

Although the veteran manager was unsuccessful in his latest venture, he still offers a wealth of Championship experience and is known for his ability to stabilise clubs.

Hull were considering bringing the 61-year-old to the Yorkshire club, having already scouted him last year, but according to Hull Daily Mail (16 May), they have decided he is no longer in contention.

The owners are leaning towards younger, more modern managers, with West Brom target Ryan Mason one of the names on their shortlist.

Championship scramble for managers

Shilen Patel is increasingly under pressure to secure a manager as a growing number of Championship clubs are looking for new managers this summer.

Portsmouth are the only team in the bottom half of the table to have retained their manager since the start of the 2024-25 season, with as many as six looking to make an appointment in the coming months.

The fear of rivals potentially poaching their top targets places a lot of pressure on West Brom to accelerate their search.

Fans will be pleased that Patel seems intent on bringing players to the Hawthorns, but his most important task is to bring in the right person to guide the club into the 2025-26 season.
