West Brom new manager: Rookie coach now evens to take charge at The Hawthorns

West Brom’s search for Tony Mowbray’s successor continues after he was sacked in April.

The 61-year-old returned to The Hawthorns to much acclaim after securing promotion with the Baggies into the Premier League in the 2007-08 campaign.

However, his second stint with Albion was an utter failure as he oversaw a run of just five wins in 18 matches, with his side falling out of play-off contention.

Shilen Patel seems to be taking his time to appoint the new man, which is a welcome step after the rush to give Mowbray the job in January.

Ryan Mason closes in on West Brom vacancy

Tottenham coach Mason has been touted as a contender for the vacancy since Mowbray was dismissed.

The 33-year-old is a highly-rated asset at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and has been in interim charge of the North Londoners on two separate occasions.

He is yet to take his first full steps into management but that could be about to change, according to the latest bookmakers’ odds.

The one-cap England international is now even odds with Bet Victor to be appointed as the new Baggies boss ahead of the likes of Eric Ramsay (11/4) and James Morrison (7/2).

Russell Martin (6/1) and John Mousinho (8/1) have fallen in the betting and now seem like outside chances to be handed the role in the Black Country.

West Brom cannot afford to get it wrong

Bilkul Football have to get the next appointment right in the West Midlands, there is no room for error if they are to secure a return to the Premier League, for the first time since the 2020-21 season.

They have enough trust in the bank, having stabilised the club from a financial perspective after the disastrous ownership of Guochuan Lai.

Mason’s record as interim Spurs boss.

However, that could erode if the Baggies miss out on a play-off berth once again because they made the wrong decision.

It remains to be seen whether they get the call right, Mason would be an exciting appointment as he is an unknown quantity, but also a huge risk for their promotion ambitions due to his limited experience.
