West Brom rivals could already face points deduction in Championship next season

West Brom are preparing for another season in the Championship, as they finally aim to get back into the Premier League.

The Baggies fell apart in the second half of this campaign after losing Carlos Corberan to Valencia, and finished outside the play-off places.

West Brom will once again face stiff competition, though, as Ipswich, Southampton and Leicester look to forget about the embarrassment of this season.

The Foxes may find it harder than the others, with potential punishment coming their way.

Leicester City could face Championship points deduction

Leicester and West Brom will go head-to-head in the Championship promotion race next season, but the Baggies may now have an advantage.

As per iNews (20 May), Leicester have been reported to an independent commission by the Premier League over breaching spending rules.

Leicester’s loss of £200million exceeds the three-year limit of £105million, and the standard punishment is a significant points deduction.

Despite the referral coming from the Premier League, the deduction would hit them in the Championship, rather than being suspended for any potential return to the top flight.

With the Foxes suffering a humiliating relegation after a nightmare season, their problems look set to continue, and this could now harm them in the Championship.

West Brom to compete with Leicester next season

In ordinary circumstances, Leicester would be one of the favourites to win the Championship next season, but if they are deducted points, it could seriously harm their chances of promotion.

Leicester also have to deal with the loss of the legendary Jamie Vardy, while it is unclear who will become their next manager, as Ruud van Nistelrooy heads to the chopping block.

West Brom need to capitalise on this as they attempt to compete with Leicester next season.

While the Baggies are also without a manager, they are in a more stable position, and if they get the summer window right, they can put themselves in a situation where they can seal promotion ahead of some massive clubs.
