Ian Pearce pushing to beat Southampton and Watford for new West Brom transfer

Ian Pearce is pushing to sign a new left-back despite the fact West Brom are still yet to replace Tony Mowbray as manager.

The Baggies’ director of football is keen to move early and secure West Brom’s first summer signing and struggles at left-back have made it a priority position to reinforce over the summer.

Last season, Callum Styles filled in as an inverted left-back despite a preference to play further up the pitch and a long-term solution is being sought in the window.

While Albion are still hunting for a new manager, the structure is in place to still keep searching for new signings and rumours are already swirling as to who will be targeted.

West Brom eye move for Hearts ace

According to Graeme Bailey, in information provided by EFL Analysis (20 May), Pearce is targeting a move for Hearts left-back James Penrice to get the Baggies’ summer business moving.

It is noted that Southampton and Watford are also vying for the 26-year-old’s signature but Pearce is pushing to beat two of Albion’s 2025-26 Championship rivals to the punch.

Penrice would add valuable experience to West Brom

Penrice would arrive with valuable experience, having made five appearances for Hearts in the Europa Conference League this season.

The transition from Scottish football to the English game is always challenging, but Penrice has the qualities to adapt quickly and meet the demands.

West Brom are yet to appoint a new manager, but the likes of John Mousinho and Ryan Mason are among the names to have been linked with the role.

Securing a new manager is a bigger priority than new signings, with current players eager to know who they’ll be playing under next season.

However, if Pearce can bring in the Livingston-born wing-back early, it could set the tone for a strong summer window for West Brom.

Having missed out on the play-offs this season, it is imperative that things are right off the pitch to make a fresh challenge this time around.
