West Brom fans immediately react to Aston Villa controversy – ‘legend’, ‘love to see it’
West Brom have had a season to forget, but many at The Hawthorns were left cheering as Aston Villa suffered a disastrous end to their own campaign.
The Baggies crashed out of the race for a Championship play-off spot in the second half of the season, as they hunt for a new manager after sacking Tony Mowbray.
West Brom could have returned to the Premier League, which would have reignited their rivalry with Aston Villa.
However, there is still reason to cheer, as Villa were beaten in controversial circumstances at Manchester United on the final day of the Premier League, costing them a Champions League spot.

West Brom fans laugh as Aston Villa lose at Manchester United
Villa were beaten 2-0 at Old Trafford, but the first goal came in controversial circumstances as Morgan Rogers’ strike was wrongfully disallowed moments before.
West Brom fans have now taken to X to laugh at the incident, which played a huge part as they missed out on Champions League football on goal difference.
Some even pointed back at the goalline technology blunder that kept them in the Premier League years ago against Sheffield United.
Aston Villa suffer brutal refereeing decision
West Brom fans have pointed out that Villa benefited from a shocking refereeing decision in 2020, when goal-line technology was not turned on as they beat the Blades, a result which kept them in the Premier League.
This was a critical moment, as they have since gone on to finish in the top four and challenge consistently in Europe under Unai Emery.
Competition | Appearances | Goals | Assists |
Premier League | 37 | 8 | 11 |
Champions League | 12 | 4 | 3 |
FA Cup | 5 | 2 | 1 |
West Brom were relegated a year later and have not been in the Premier League since, but they will now be happy that Villa have suffered from a wrong decision.
They have now finished sixth, outside the Champions League places, despite finishing level on points with Newcastle, as their inferior goal difference has kept them below, and even a draw at Old Trafford would have seen them qualify for the second consecutive season.
West Brom fans can laugh for now, but they will know that a return to the Premier League is all that matters, and hopefully that arrives next season.
