Ryan Mason makes West Brom sweat in new manager development

West Brom are close to appointing a new manager, with Ryan Mason the favourite to take the hotseat at The Hawthorns.

The Baggies have been locked in talks with Mason, who is currently one of Ange Postecoglou’s assistant coaches at Tottenham.

However, a fresh twist has emerged in the manager saga, meaning West Brom supporters will have to wait a little longer for his possible appointment.

Mason to keep West Brom waiting

West Brom have been in the hunt for a new manager since sacking Tony Mowbray in late April.

After his departure, former player James Morrison took temporary charge for the final few games of the Championship season.

With the Baggies keen to get their next appointment right, Mason has emerged as the frontrunner, with his contract at Spurs set to expire.

Although talks have taken place, the West Midlands club will have to wait for the former Hull City man’s decision.

That is according to Baggies’ insider Dood (29 May), who claims that no decision will be made until Sunday or Monday, with Mason making them sweat.

Mason worth a Baggies gamble

If Mason is to be appointed as West Brom manager, then it would be his first permanent role in management.

The Englishman was forced to retire from professional football in 2018 after suffering a skull fracture while playing for Hull against Chelsea.

Following his retirement, Mason joined Spurs’ coaching team, having made 70 appearances as a player for the North London club.

The 33-year-old had held the position of caretaker manager of Tottenham on two occasions, for a total of 13 games.

During his time as interim boss, he won six of 13 matches and famously lost the 2020/21 Carabao Cup final to Manchester City.

Although he is inexperienced, Mason would be worth a punt for West Brom as they enter a new era.

The former midfielder has worked under the likes of Antonio Conte and Postecoglou and will have learned much in his role.

After seven years in coaching, now is the time for Mason to step into management.
