West Brom set to make Ryan Mason announcement as agreement reached

West Brom appear to be on the verge of announcing Ryan Mason’s arrival at The Hawthorns.

Tony Mowbray was sacked by West Brom after just three months in charge as the Baggies fell away from the Championship play-off picture.

Mowbray, who replaced Carlos Corberan in January after the Spaniard departed for Valencia, registered just five wins from 17 games in his second spell in charge.

Mason quickly became the favourite to take the top job at The Hawthorns, in what would be his first permanent managerial role.

As a result, an announcement is expected in the coming days, with the ex-Tottenham and Hull City midfielder set to leave his role as an assistant coach at Spurs to move to the Midlands.

Since retiring from football, Mason has spent over seven years at Tottenham in various coaching roles, including two separate spells as interim head coach in 2021 and 2023.

Mason’s appointment is a risk that could pay off

The Baggies are taking a significant risk in appointing the Spurs assistant manager, who will need backing in the summer.

Mason, who has experience under Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, has only managed 13 games as Tottenham’s interim boss, including losing the 2021 Carabao Cup final to Manchester City.

In those 13 games, the Englishman made the most of Spurs’ attacking talent, scoring 26 times, including scoring three or more goals on four separate occasions. Therefore, this will excite fans as scoring goals has been West Brom’s main problem.

They found the net just 57 times this season and scored more than once in a game just twice in their last 12 league games, with Josh Maja the only player reaching double figures. However, the issue with Mason is an inability to prevent goals at the other end.

Tottenham only kept three clean sheets in the games he took charge of, conceding 21 times, including four away at Liverpool in 2023. Meanwhile, the Baggies had the best defence outside of the top four in the Championship this season, conceding just 47 times.

However, if the former Spurs midfielder can perfect the blend of his attacking football with West Brom’s defensive solidity, he could become a major success story at The Hawthorns.
