Jim White sends message as West Brom confirm Ryan Mason appointment

West Brom ended their lengthy search for a new manager by appointing Ryan Mason in his first permanent role as head coach.

The Baggies had been eyeing a replacement for Tony Mowbray, who was sacked in late April following his second spell at The Hawthorns.

Talks between Mason and West Brom lasted several days, but the feeling was that he would agree terms with the West Midlands outfit.

Now he has been confirmed, presenter Jim White has shared a message with the 33-year-old as he starts his new job.

Mason’s record as temporary Spurs manager over two spells

Mason has been the temporary head coach twice before at Spurs, taking over from Jose Mourinho and Christian Stellini.

The former midfielder even managed Tottenham in the Carabao Cup final in 2021, when they lost to Manchester City.

As he begins a new role at The Hawthorns, White has shared his wishes with Mason on X (2 June).

He said: “Congrats to Ryan Mason. New West Brom head coach – three-year deal.”

West Brom take gamle with Ryan Mason

Given Mason’s lack of managerial experience, it would be safe to say that his appointment is a gamble for the Baggies.

That is not to say he is not a worthwhile risk, however, as he has seven years of coaching experience already under his belt.

The 33-year-old will almost certainly be set the goal of a top-six finish at a minimum by the West Brom hierarchy.

Mowbray was unable to reach the play-offs after taking over from Carlos Corberan, and that ultimately sealed his fate.

Mason will bring fresh ideas and approaches to The Hawthorns, and that is exactly what the West Midlands club needs.

Furthermore, he will be expected to use his Tottenham links to get players through the door, with Mikey Moore a realistic option for Mason.

Of course, Mason must be given time, but it will be intriguing to see how his future plays out at The Hawthorns.
