West Brom make ‘fantastic’ Heggem announcement after Norway win v Italy

Torbjorn Heggem established himself as a crucial part of West Brom’s defence this season.

The Norwegian international joined the Baggies last summer and immediately impressed fans with his reliable performances.

Heggem slotted right in after joining in a £525,000 deal, making 45 league appearances, scoring one goal and helping Albion keep 14 clean sheets.

Heggem only missed one league match this season, against Bristol City, as West Brom narrowly missed out on the Championship play-offs.

The 26-year-old’s performances have caught the eye of more than just West Brom fans, with rumours emerging he could depart this summer.

Heggem applauded after Norway’s performance

The Albion took to social media to congratulate their centre-back after Norway’s 3-0 victory over Italy in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers on Friday.

Heggem featured in his country’s starting 11 for only the third time, after being named in their World Cup qualifying squad last month (27 May).

The 26-year-old played 71 minutes, with Norway sitting at the top of their qualifying group, having won all three of their opening matches.

There are five more matches to play, and Norway appear to have a real chance of topping their group, which would end a 26-year wait to reach a major tournament again.

Posting on X, West Brom wrote: “A fantastic Friday night for Torbjorn Heggem.”

West Brom need to keep Heggem

With Ryan Mason taking over the managerial role, West Brom are already looking to rebuild ahead of the new season.

Promotion dreams remain for the Baggies, but securing next season’s defence will be essential to this.

Semi Ajayi will leave The Hawthorns this summer, with his contract expiring at the end of the month.

If West Brom look to cash in on Heggem, serious action will be needed in the transfer window to replicate last season’s performances.

The Baggies have already expressed interest in defenders Gora Diouf, George Campbell and James Penrice, with the hope that at least one will make the move.

The Albion do look prepared for defensive reinforcements with key targets already lined up; however, keeping Heggem should be a priority, as he continues to skyrocket.
