Tony Mowbray now in running for another Championship job after West Brom sack

Tony Mowbray could return to management just two months after being sacked by West Brom.

The 61-year-old was dismissed on 21 April after a run of just five wins from 17 matches that saw The Hawthorns outfit eliminated from play-off contention.

However, he could return to the Championship after new developments from one of the Albion’s rivals for promotion.

Middlesbrough could hire Mowbray despite West Brom failure

Middlesbrough are another contender for a Premier League berth, but just like the Baggies, their playoff push faltered.

Michael Carrick paid for that failure with his job, as he was sacked on 4 June after two-and-a-half years in charge.

Former Albion boss Mowbray is 10/1 with Bet Victor to take over from the former Manchester United star despite the circumstances of his departure from The Hawthorns.

Ex-Liverpool man Steven Gerrard is the current favourite to land the role at 6/4, while the likes of Rob Edwards (5/2), Steve Cooper (3/1) and Sean Dyche (8/1) are all ahead of Mowbray in the betting.

West Brom fans would not want to see Mowbray back in the division

The way that Mowbray’s second stint ended still stings for some Baggies supporters.

He was expected to revitalise the Throstles’ play-off hopes after replacing Carlos Corberan, but he failed to have the required impact.

He came back to much fanfare given that has taken the Black Country club to the top-flight in the 2007-08 season but his second spell was not to bring the same outcome and it was clear that they needed to move in a different direction.

The fanbase would likely be conflicted if he returned to the second tier, some would want him to do well but others may want him to fail as if he succeeded it would harm their own promotion chances.

Shilen Patel will hope that the decision to sack the veteran is vindicated with Ryan Mason offering a lot of potential despite it being his first managerial role.

The former Tottenham coach brings a new tactical blueprint and connections to his former club in the transfer market to potentially bring in the likes of Mikey Moore and Jamie Donley, although it remains to be seen whether he can break the malaise.
