West Brom agree contract terms with versatile defender as club figure speaks out

West Brom have work to do this summer after missing out on the play-offs last season.

The Baggies are looking ahead to a busy transfer window, which has to see things turn around after such a frustrating end to the last campaign.

With Ryan Mason in charge, alterations are already in the offing as a new era in the dugout looks set to get underway in the coming weeks.

As a result, it is positive to see a new deal agreed at The Hawthorns with the main part of the summer now prepared to kick off.

West Brom chief speaks out after contract agreement

As it stands, Albion are in need of reinforcements in the squad after parting ways with many first-team players at this stage.

Grady Diangana, John Swift and Semi Ajayi have all made their way out of B71 after their contracts came to an end in the Black Country.

With that being said, it is certainly good news to hear that an academy ace has signed a new deal rather than facing the same fate as this trio.

This comes after the Baggies announced on 16 June that defender Alfie Maughan has signed his first professional contract at The Hawthorns.

The 17-year-old has agreed fresh terms over a two-year deal with Albion, which has certainly been well-received by Academy Manager Richard Stevens.

Speaking to the official West Brom website (16 June), he said: “Alfie’s another boy who’s been in the system since pre-academy, is Albion through and through, and loves everything about the football club. He comes in every day like it’s the most important thing to him, and as a footballer, he really has developed.

“He’s improving all of the time with his defending and is another who can take his football career as far as he can. This club can help him do that, and it was really important that we offered Alfie this contract. Hopefully, Albion will see the fruits of his work over years to come.”

Maughan signs new West Brom contract

As it stands, nobody knows exactly what sort of footballing philosophy Mason is going to utilise after taking over as head coach.

There is already evidence that the Englishman is going to be intent on utilising young players throughout his spell in the Black Country.

This has already seen links to Tottenham starlet Mikey Moore, who could complete a loan switch to the Albion this summer.

The news of this will certainly represent a positive prospect for versatile defender Maughan after penning his new deal with the hopes of becoming a regular in B71.

It is clear that the defender is highly rated and is likely to flourish at The Hawthorns, as long as Aston Villa don’t come swooping in for a young Baggies player again
