West Brom Championship promotion rivals to sack manager with announcement set

West Brom fell disappointingly short in their quest for promotion in the Championship last season.

Carlos Corberan’s exit at Christmas left the Baggies in a difficult position, and ultimately, Tony Mowbray proved to be the wrong appointment as they fell out of the top six.

Shilen Patel has now appointed Ryan Mason as the main man, and the Albion will be hoping for a strong summer so they can push for promotion once more next term.

West Brom may have been given an advantage without even making a signing yet, too, as a Championship rival is set to make a big change.

Chris Wilder to leave Sheffield United

The standard at the top of the Championship was high last season, and Sheffield United finished 14 points clear of Sunderland in fourth place.

However, it was Leeds and Burnley who pinched the automatic promotion spots, clear by 10 points of the Blades, who hit 90.

This left Chris Wilder’s men the favourites going into the play-offs, while the Baggies fell away, leaving Sunderland, Bristol City and Coventry City to battle it out.

It was the Black Cats who came out on top, though, beating United at Wembley Stadium to secure promotion to the Premier League.

Now, Sheffield United will have to get themselves in shape to battle for a place at the right end of the Championship table once more.

The South Yorkshire outfit are set to do it in a different fashion, though, as John Percy has reported (17 June) that Sheffield United have made the decision to sack Wilder, with an announcement set to be made in the next 24 hours.

Mason needs a strong summer window with West Brom

The decision to sack Wilder at Bramall Lane seems like quite a harsh one, given how well he did with his side last season.

However, for promotion rivals like West Brom, this can serve as a bit of a benefit as it gives them the opportunity to get ahead in the summer transfer window, while the Blades work on appointing a new manager.

Mason being in the hot seat at The Hawthorns should allow Albion to play a better style of football in comparison to what Mowbray was overseeing.

The pressure is on to be at the right end of the Championship table next term and the Baggies will certainly be hoping the race for the top is less saturated this season.
