Jakov Medic bid accepted amid West Brom transfer pursuit, deal exceeds £2.5m

West Brom have emerged as one of several possible candidates to complete the signing of Jakov Medic.

The Baggies are understood to be admirers of the Ajax centre-back, and are keen to make him the first new signing of the Ryan Mason era ahead of a likely promotion push next term.

West Brom were prepared to battle Norwich City for the Medic’s signature, as the two Championship rivals are both looking to bolster their backline ahead of the new Championship campaign.

Medic has made just seven appearances for Ajax, and spent last season on loan at VfL Bochum in the Bundesliga, but was unable to prevent his loan club from being relegated at the end of the campaign.

Norwich have agreed a fee for Medic

West Brom had turned their attention to Medic after they received discouraging news relating to the likelihood of Gora Diouf receiving a work permit.

Now though, it looks as though the Baggies could be forced to revert their attention to an alternative target once again, as Norwich have made a crucial step in the race to bring Medic to England.

The Canaries have reached an agreement with Ajax over the fee for Medic, according to De Telegraaf (18 June).

It is understood that the Norfolk outfit will pay £2.1million up front, with a further £427,000 potentially to come in bonuses. Ajax also have a sell-on clause inserted as part of the agreement.

West Brom should turn their attention away from Medic

There are sure to be several players linked with a switch to The Hawthorns this summer after Mason’s appointment, but this looks like it could be one of those links which ultimately falls by the wayside.

Medic has plenty of experience in the German second tier, and having also stepped up to the Bundesliga last season, he would have undoubtedly been a good piece of business for West Brom.

The Baggies may be tempted to table their own offer and try to hijack Norwich’s attempt to secure a deal in the latter stages, but with Medic’s preference thought to be a move to Carrow Road, there seems little point in the West Midlands outfit progressing with their interest.

Mason and Co. will have plenty of work to do on the squad this summer, so it makes little sense for them to be caught up in a bid to sign a player who has designs on a move elsewhere in their division.
