Swift ‘could be set for Champions League chance’ after West Brom exit

John Swift has officially become a free agent after his West Brom contract expired on 30 June.

There’s reportedly a host of Championship clubs interested in signing Swift, while interest has also come from Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

However, a new club has entered the race to sign the midfielder, which might give him the chance to play in the Champions League.

Rangers are believed to be interested in signing Swift

If Swift fancies a move to Scotland, he may get the opportunity to play for Glasgow Rangers.

A report from SportsBoom (2 July) suggests that new Rangers manager Russell Martin is an admirer of the midfielder and wants to bring him to Ibrox.

Rangers have just been taken over by 49ers Enterprises. The club’s new owners have given Martin a huge transfer war chest in an attempt to end Celtic’s recent dominance of the Scottish league.

They will also take on Panathinaikos in the second qualifying round of the Champions League later in July, and the goal will be to add some experienced new signings before this two-legged tie.

The Glasgow club would certainly be able to meet Swift’s wage demands if they were serious about adding him to their squad.

Baggies fans would be surprised to see Swift playing in the Champions League

John Swift was a consistent performer at The Hawthorns for three seasons, but many Baggies fans will agree it was the right decision not to offer him a new contract.

A lot of the fanbase believe in Ryan Mason’s vision of signing younger players who have hunger and energy to fight for promotion to the Premier League.

Swift is a player with great talent and a wealth of experience, but it is generally thought that his best days may be behind him.

The 30-year-old will be keen to prove that this isn’t the case, and what better way to do that than to line up for a new team in the Champions League.

Rangers will need to get through three qualifying ties to compete in the expanded group stage, but perhaps Swift will get the opportunity to help the Glasgow club get there.
