West Brom Championship rivals join Sheffield Wednesday under transfer embargo

West Brom are likely watching on in astonishment as two of their Championship rivals have been hit with transfer embargos already.

The season is not anywhere near starting, but already a couple of sides face a year of uncertainty after recent news.

Sheffield Wednesday were the first team to be hit by the EFL with an embargo per Regulation 54.1, which is non-payment to players.

Now, another Championship club has been hit by the same action, with further sanctions possible.

Championship club now placed under embargo by EFL

As Sheffield Wednesday face an uncertain future, West Brom have been linked with their talisman, Barry Bannan.

Their chairman, Dejphon Chansiri, has been charged by the EFL with multiple breaches of regulations relating to payment obligations.

To make matters worse, Wednesday could lose their manager, Danny Rohl, who has long been linked with a Hillsborough departure.

Now, their Championship rivals Hull City have also been hit with a transfer embargo by the Football League, according to The Telegraph (3 July).

John Percy writes that the Tigers are under increasing scrutiny over alleged non-payments to other clubs and local suppliers.

He adds that they could face possible further sanctions, including the prospect of severe restrictions over the next three transfer windows.

Percy states that Hull owe nearly £1million to an unnamed Premier League club, and there are concerns over future instalments agreed with other clubs.

West Brom rivals chuck around bids in crazy day for Hull

Perhaps the craziest thing about Hull’s embargo is the number of sizeable bids they have reportedly placed already.

Previous Sunderland target Matija Frigan was the subject of a seismic £7million bid from the Tigers, according to Mackem News.

Furthermore, Hull reportedly tabled a £3.5million bid for Louis Barry, as well as a £5million bid for Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O’Brien.

News of such bids sums up the chaotic tenure of Acun Ilicali, who has never been short of controversy.

Last summer, Ilicali relieved Liam Rosenior of his duties despite leading Hull to a seventh-place finish, and since then, the Tigers’ demise has continued and now has hit an all-time low.
