West Brom star Mikey Johnston's potential move to Flamengo was one of the most unexpected stories of the window.

The 26-year-old joined the Baggies on a permanent deal from Celtic for £3million last summer after originally moving on loan.

The Albion looked set to secure a profit on the Ireland winger as a £5m fee was agreed and he was set to fly out to Brazil, but it appears that is not the case anymore.

Flamengo give up on Johnston deal, new target ready

Johnston is set to miss out on a dream move away from The Hawthorns after the transfer broke down.

Flamengo fan and content creator Alexandre Mattos exclusively told West Brom News that the Brazilian side gave up on the signing due to fan backlash and are looking for a new, bigger target.

He said: "Flamengo gave up on the signing due to pressure from the Board of Directors and the fans.

"They think the player is a gamble, and we have the money to sign a more ready and expensive player.

"Due to the negative comments, they gave up on the signing and are looking for another name."

Johnson can now focus on West Brom ambitions

The Albion are trying to get back into the Premier League, but they failed to even reach the play-offs last season after a dismal finish to the campaign.

Johnson notched five goals and three assists in 40 league matches last season and could play a huge part for Ryan Mason after the deal fell through.

The former Tottenham coach could now help to get the best out of Johnston, who had an underwhelming campaign following his loan spell, when he scored seven in 20 appearances.

He will now link up with his teammates in Austria for their pre-season preparations ahead of the new season.

Shilen Patel and Co. still have to balance the books while bringing in players for the new boss, so it will be a fine juggling act.

The money that they would have received for Johnston would have been ideal, but it looks like they will have to find a different solution as Flamengo move onto alternatives.
