Mikey Johnston exit collapses as transfer saga explodes in Brazil

West Brom were expected to sell Mikey Johnston to Flamengo, but the move has taken a late turn.

The clubs had reportedly agreed on a £5million deal, with the Irishman set to travel to Brazil to complete the formalities of a life-changing move.

The winger signed a four-year deal with the Baggies permanently just 12 months ago, in a move worth around £3m from Celtic.

Johnston set to stay at West Brom

Johnston’s proposed move to Flamengo had sparked debate amongst West Brom fans.

Whilst the winger had lit up the Championship during his initial loan from Celtic for the second half of the 2023/24 season, he struggled for consistency last term.

And £5m would have provided the Baggies with an immediate profit, while also allowing them wiggle room within the profit and sustainability rules.

However, in a late turnaround, Johnston now looks set to stay at The Hawthorns, according to reports in Brazil.

Flamengo reportedly plan to back out of the deal after receiving backlash from their diehard fans.

Johnston will now join back up with the West Brom squad, who are in Austria for their pre-season training camp.

According to Sky Sports and Anthony Joseph, the Irishman is relaxed about the situation.

Whilst keen to explore the unique opportunity, Johnston is happy to remain at West Brom and take part in the fresh start under Ryan Mason.

It is not clear whether the latest development will affect any of the Baggies’ other business, with Aune Heggebo expected to join from Norwegian club Brann for around £4.75m in the coming days.

West Brom may be happy to keep Johnston

Johnston, while inconsistent last season, represents a unique profile within the West Brom squad.

A natural left-winger, the 26-year-old blew away The Hawthorns faithful during his initial loan stint at the club, scoring seven goals and providing an assist in just 18 appearances.

If Johnston can reach a similar level next season, West Brom will be delighted to have kept him, with Mason hoping to encourage a more attacking style.

The deal’s collapse also gives the Baggies one less target to pursue, as a replacement would have certainly been necessary.
