Patel and the rest of the West Brom hierarchy will need to come up with a solution to navigate the fresh PSR obstacle presented by Johnston’s failed move to Brazil.
Instead of selling Johnston as planned, West Brom may look to sell players such as Daryl Dike or Jed Wallace.
The signing of Aune Heggebo has provided optimism for the new season, in which Albion supporters will be hoping they can push for promotion again.
Ahead of their first pre-season game against Dynamo Kyiv, Patel shared this optimistic stance with a message to the West Brom faithful on X (10 July).
He wrote: “Beautiful setting to prepare for a big West Brom season.”

Albion supporters are already asking for a new first-choice goalkeeper at The Hawthorns after concerning footage from their training camp emerged.
Mason’s pre-season fixtures will allow the young English manager to assess any potential holes in his squad that need to be addressed.
Equally, he can hand signings like Nat Phillips and Heggebo debuts to allow them to gel with their new teammates as soon as possible.
The unknown quantity that is Mason as a manager means supporters do not know what to expect, which is both an exciting and equally scary feeling.
Mason’s start to life at West Brom off the pitch has already been dramatic, with a proposed move for David Brooks collapsing at the last minute after seemingly being done and dusted.
