West Brom ‘to sign their own Callum Doyle’ as another transfer nears

West Brom are starting to make progress in the transfer window, and a third signing is now imminent.

Nat Phillips and Aune Heggebo have both joined to strengthen the attack and the defence, but more recruits will be needed before the start of the season.

West Brom’s disappointing end to last season has sparked a need for a rebuild, and several positions are being targeted.

Despite the arrival of Phillips, Ryan Mason wants to further strengthen his defensive options, and is now targeting his own equivalent of Callum Doyle, who is a Premier League talent in demand this summer.

West Brom nearing George Campbell signing

Doyle spent last season on loan at Norwich City from Manchester City, and the centre-back was outstanding in the Championship, with his ability on the ball catching the eye.

West Brom are now hoping to sign a similar player, as they are closing in on the signing of Montreal defender George Campbell, who could arrive in the coming days.

The USA international would arrive as a player ready to make an immediate impact, and would slot in at centre-back alongside Phillips.

Mason could move to a back three, and the departure of Semi Ajayi, as well as the uncertain West Brom future of Torbjorn Heggem, has sparked interest in Campbell.

The 24-year-old, like Doyle, is not exactly an old-school defender, but he is capable of adding something no other West Brom defender has.

Campbell can add ball-playing ability to West Brom defence

As per FBref, Doyle is the player most alike Campbell when comparing players of similar ability and in the same position.

Campbell excels in possession, ranking as one of the best among his peers for his progressive passing, and ability to drive the ball out of defence – just like Doyle.

Indeed, Campbell averages a pass completion rate of 86 per cent, which is almost identical to that of Doyle (85 per cent).

Defensively, Campbell averages 1.41 blocks per 90 minutes, compared to 1.34 for Doyle.

Campbell’s strengths and weaknesses are remarkably aligned with Doyle’s from his loan at Norwich City, with both players ranking poorly in the air and for tackles, but are among the best around for their ability to start attacks from the back.

This could mean Campbell is ideal for a back three as a more advanced option than Phillips or Heggem, and could help Mason implement a style with more playing out of the back.

Campbell has recorded five assists in 78 games from centre-back for Montreal, and his ability to push higher up makes him an exciting signing for the Baggies.
