Campbell misses two games as ‘very advanced’ West Brom transfer close

West Brom look set to sign George Campbell from MLS side CF Montreal.

Ryan Mason’s side are making progress again in the transfer window, having already signed Nat Phillips from Liverpool and Aune Heggebo from Brann.

The Baggies could also make some sales of their own this summer after Mikey Johnston’s potential move to Flamengo failed to materialise, which would have brought in some cash to The Hawthorns.

West Brom are looking to put that behind them as they are set to complete the signing of Campbell.

Campbell misses two Montreal games as exit nears

Campbell’s move to The Albion is a smart one.

The defender will cost a total of £1million, with West Brom beating a number of Championship clubs to the American’s signature.

As shared by Canadian journalist Andy Coronado on X (15 July), Montreal manager Marco Donadel confirmed that Campbell wasn’t available in their latest game against Orlando.

The 24-year-old also won’t feature in their game against Philadelphia Union because talks over a transfer are very advanced.

While the manager doesn’t specify who the centre-back will be joining, it’s reported that West Brom have agreed a fee and personal terms with the defender, but are just waiting on a medical to be completed.

Campbell will offer much-needed versatility in the West Brom defence, having played at both centre-back and right-back regularly in his career.

Campbell signing allows Mason to prioritise other areas of the pitch

Campbell is a rare bargain in today’s transfer market, so it will be interesting to see how he performs in the Championship.

Mason’s second defensive signing will allow the Baggies to add more options in the attacking third of the field.

The Albion already lost Grady Diangana at the end of last season, and with the potential risk of losing Tom Fellows, West Brom will start to think about adding more depth up top.

Whether Fellows leaves or not, there remains optimism that Mason will continue to find the right players that suit his team before the end of the transfer window.
