George Campbell touches down for West Brom medical as training ground update drops

West Brom are slowly putting together a new-look squad for Ryan Mason.

Mason’s project in the Black Country looks set to gain another fresh face, with George Campbell on the brink of completing a move to The Hawthorns.

Alongside Albion’s new striker Aune Heggebo, supporters will be hopeful that Campbell can transition from playing abroad to the Championship seamlessly.

The 24-year-old CF Montreal centre back will provide a more youthful option for Mason to deploy in the heart of his defence, with Kyle Bartley’s future with the Baggies seemingly uncertain.

Campbell undergoing medical ahead of West Brom move

Campbell will join Nat Phillips as another defensive addition to Mason’s squad, with the competition for places heating up before the opening game of the season against Blackburn in August.

According to the WBA Report on X (17 July), Campbell is currently at the training ground to undergo a medical ahead of his £1m move to West Brom from CF Montréal.

Whether Campbell can make a good enough impression in pre-season to force his way into the side ahead of Phillips or Torbjorn Heggem remains to be seen, but it is useful for Mason to have multiple options within his squad.

With the Albion also interested in signing K League star Jeon Jin-woo, it will be interesting to see how this new-look West Brom team, with multiple players joining from overseas, gels under a young manager who is in his first full-time position.

West Brom have to gamble on signings from overseas

Despite getting big wages off their books in the summer from releasing players like John Swift, West Brom still have to manage their finances smartly.

Following Mikey Johnston’s collapsed move to Flamengo, the Baggies may still have to sell some notable names before the new Championship campaign begins due to PSR concerns.

This puts even more pressure on Shilen Patel and Co. to ensure that the right players join the Black Country club and avoid wasting valuable resources.

Seydou Fini could prove to be a shrewd investment, with the 19-year-old winger being on the shopping list of multiple Championship clubs.

Genoa are reported to be requesting up to £5million for their player, who could thrive at West Brom if given the opportunity under an exciting young manager in Mason.

Recruiting from overseas, whilst being a gamble, can provide value in the market that is simply not available when signing players from other English clubs.

Continuing this risky approach could pay off and see Albion secure a spot in the play-offs next season if these new players, like Campbell, hit the ground running.
