David Beckham sends message to West Brom-mad Hannah Hampton after England heroics

England Women successfully progressed to the 2025 Euros semi-finals on Thursday in a dramatic shootout.

The Lionesses are the holders of the competition after winning the tournament in 2022, beating Germany in the final.

However, it appeared that England were set for an early exit in Switzerland when they found themselves 2-0 down at half-time to Sweden.

Nevertheless, the Lionesses staged a late comeback to take the match to penalties, where goalkeeper Hannah Hampton shone.

Hampton is a well-known West Brom supporter after growing up in the West Midlands.

While the goalkeeper has never had the pleasure of playing at The Hawthorns for the Baggies, she has gone on to have a highly successful career and was part of Chelsea’s invincible squad last season.

The 24-year-old went into Euro 2025 as England’s first-choice goalkeeper after Mary Earps’ shock retirement.

However, against Sweden, she proved her worth, as the goalkeeper saved two penalties, with the Lionesses winning 3-2 in the shootout.

Many stars were quick to react to the display, including England icon David Beckham, who praised Hampton on his Instagram story (17 July).

He said: “Wow…what a shootout. Congratulations Hannah Hampton.”

Hampton can be an inspiration for West Brom Women this season

West Brom Women’s campaign is set to kick off next month as they look to improve on last season’s poor showing.

However, given Hampton’s recent heroics at the Euros, many of the stars at The Hawthorns should look to get inspiration from the local star.

Manager Siobhan Hodgetts-Still will be looking for improvements from her players this campaign, and Hampton’s performance may help them up their game.

Promotion into the WSL 2 needs to be the aspiration at the Black Country club, and it is certainly doable over the next few years.

Hopefully, the Baggies will at least challenge for promotion in the upcoming season and close the gap on rivals such as Wolves.

If not, it will become increasingly more difficult for West Brom to get out of the third tier and progress up the English pyramid.
