West Brom want to seal Lewis transfer after ‘nightmare’ developments

West Brom are among clubs interested in a move for out-of-contract defender Jamal Lewis.

The Northern Irishman left Newcastle United at the end of the season following the end of his contract at St James’ Park.

And the 27-year-old is now among options for Ryan Mason, as the Baggies look to continue their preparations for the Championship’s return.

Aune Heggebo, Nat Phillips and George Campbell have arrived at The Hawthorns so far this summer, but decision-makers are keen to provide Mason with further reinforcements.

West Brom interested in Lewis

Rumours have circled around Callum Styles this summer, with the Hungarian’s future at The Hawthorns reportedly in doubt.

Gianluca Frabotta could also leave the Baggies this summer, after the Italian failed to start a single Championship match last season and appeared in just six following his move from Juventus.

That has left Mason in search of a new left-back, and, according to the Belfast Telegraph (22 July), Lewis is one of the options under consideration.

Middlesbrough and Norwich City are also interested in Lewis, who is available on a free transfer.

The 27-year-old had joined Sao Paulo on loan last season but would make just six appearances in the club’s red and white before an injury saw the agreement terminated early and Lewis sent back to Newcastle – a situation described as a “nightmare” for the Northern Ireland international.

It was Lewis’ impressive breakthrough at Norwich that prompted the Magpies’ big-money move for the left-back, but he would go on to make just 36 appearances in the North East.

Several injury issues would keep the Luton-born defender sidelined, before a loan move to Watford for the 2023/24 season gave him his first season of regular game-time in three years.

Lewis move would be cheap risk

West Brom should be hesitant about a move for Lewis. The defender has, frankly, an appalling record of injuries, and the intensity of the Championship is unlikely to help the situation.

However, the 27-year-old’s quality should be considered. Still in the prime of his career, Lewis could easily make an impact at The Hawthorns if he manages to stay fit.

That is a big if, but if the left-back is also willing to accept a pay cut on his wages, the risk may just be worth it.
