Gunn to join Nottingham Forest – Three goalkeepers West Brom could sign instead

Angus Gunn is set to join Nottingham Forest on a free transfer despite links to West Brom.

The Scot had reportedly been among targets for West Brom, who are eager to sign a new goalkeeper this summer.

But Gunn has now agreed on terms that will see him complete a move to The City Ground.

Here, West Brom News suggests three alternatives for the Baggies.

Anthony Patterson – Sunderland

Anthony Patterson looks to be on the way out at the Stadium of Light this summer, after Sunderland signed Dutch goalkeeper Robin Roefs.

The 25-year-old missed just four Championship games for Regis Le Bris’ side last season, and was a reliable presence in between the sticks as the Black Cats went up via the play-offs.

Patterson would likely command a significant fee permanently, but could be available on loan if Sunderland fail to find a permanent buyer.

Noel Tornqvist – Mjallby AIF

West Brom have shown a clear willingness to shop in Scandinavia in recent years, with Aune Heggebo and Torbjorn Heggem among those plucked from Norway and Sweden.

And Noel Tornqvist could well be the next, with the 23-year-old enjoying a superb season in the Allsvenskan for Mjallby AIF.

The Hallevik-based club are top of the table, having lost just one from 18, with Tornqvist allowing just 14 goals past him.

Mjallby would be unlikely to refuse a significant offer for the Swede, who is more than capable of carrying out Ryan Mason’s demands of playing out from the back.

Mat Ryan – Free agent

Former Arsenal and Brighton goalkeeper Mat Ryan is a free agent this summer, after leaving Ligue 1 club Lens at the end of the season.

The 33-year-old has experience throughout Europe but thrived for the Seagulls in the Premier League, making 124 appearances and earning a reputation for his cat-like reflexes.

The goalkeeper is on the shorter side at just over six feet but does not struggle when defending his box, showing good anticipation when coming for crosses.

Ryan would likely demand generous wages, but his experience and ability would be more than worth it for decision-makers at The Hawthorns.
