Torbjorn Heggem ‘accepts proposal’ to quit West Brom as demands emerge

Torbjorn Heggem may have taken a step closer to a West Brom exit.

The centre-back is attracting interest from Serie A outfit Bologna and could leave The Hawthorns before the transfer window closes.

The Norwegian picked up the West Brom Players’ Player of the Season award and also nabbed the supporters’ award after a remarkable campaign last time out.

However, Ryan Mason faces a huge battle to keep his star man around as he tries to secure a return to the Premier League.

West Brom News presents the exclusive opinion of Bologna-based journalist Luca Bortolotti.

West Brom set demands as Heggem agrees terms

It will be a miracle if West Brom can hold onto Heggem beyond the transfer deadline, as the interest from the Italians is tempting.

Bortolotti has revealed that the 26-year-old is satisfied with the contract offer, and it is now down to the clubs to agree on a fee, with Albion playing hardball.

Speaking exclusively to West Brom Zone, he said: “The player is ok with the Bologna proposal, the offer to West Brom should be around £6million, but by now they’re asking more.”

Heggem stance makes sense for West Brom

The seven-cap international is a key man for the Baggies, and is arguably the best defender in the Championship.

The Black Country club cannot afford to let him leave on the cheap; if they are going to sell him, they need to extract as much value as possible.

The sticky Profit and Sustainability position that Albion find themselves in would be relieved significantly if they held out and secured a big fee for Heggem.

The issue that may arise is the depth in the position, Nat Phillips has proved to be a bargain, but behind him, they would only have the unproven George Campbell and Caleb Taylor, whose mistimed tackle ultimately led to a Carabao Cup exit.

Therefore, it would probably leave them needing to sign two centre-backs, which could be a huge ask this late on in the window.

There is also no guarantee that the West Midlands outfit will find one as good as Heggem, which would leave them in a dangerous position in the second-tier promotion battle.
