Torbjorn Heggem to jet out of UK as West Brom accept bid

Torbjorn Heggem looks set to depart West Brom in a matter of days.

The Norwegian’s future in the West Midlands has come under heavy scrutiny in recent days, and he was left out of the Carabao Cup tie on Tuesday night.

West Brom have been facing interest in Heggem from Bologna, but the two sides had remained in disagreement over a potential transfer fee for the defender.

However, the Italian side have been undeterred in their approach, and the writing now seems to be on the wall from the Baggies’ perspective.

Heggem to fly to Italy on Wednesday night as West Brom set to land £5.6m+

Heggem’s West Brom departure hit the next stage on Wednesday afternoon, when the centre-back agreed personal terms over a move to Serie A.

That left it simply down to the two clubs to agree on a suitable transfer fee, and although the Baggies had seemingly been playing hardball previously, they have now succumbed to the pressure from Bologna.

Ryan Mason’s side have now accepted a bid, believed to be well in excess of Bologna’s initial £5.6million offer, according to Norwegian outlet Nettavisen.

Heggem is now understood to have decided that he wants the move, and he is due to fly out to Italy to complete the deal on Wednesday evening.

The 26-year-old has been a hugely important player for the Baggies throughout the last year, but only minor details and paperwork remain before his departure will be confirmed.

Heggem exit is a huge blow for Mason

Nat Phillips has already received plaudits for his start to life at West Brom, and the former Liverpool man will now gain even greater importance for his side in the event of Heggem’s exit.

Mason has a serious lack of depth to deal with at the centre of the defence, and the loss of arguably his most reliable defender only serves to exacerbate that even further.

Kyle Bartley’s recent retirement means that the Baggies will be left with just three central defenders, and one of them is Caleb Taylor, who has still made just four Championship appearances.

The transfer window only has a few weeks left to run, but Mason and Co. will now surely be forced into action as soon as possible.

The Championship has an unforgiving schedule, and to head into the bulk of the campain with just three centre-backs would be a serious concern for the new boss.
