Details of Torbjorn Heggem’s Bologna deal with West Brom clause revealed

West Brom have agreed a deal with Bologna to sell Torbjorn Heggem.

Heggem flew to Bologna for his medical on Wednesday, 13 August, and has since been spotted in the Serie A club’s training gear ahead of official confirmation.

West Brom were eager to keep the defender at The Hawthorns this summer, but have reluctantly agreed to the sale after Heggem agreed on personal terms for his exit.

Potential replacements George Campbell and Nat Phillips have already joined Ryan Mason’s squad this summer, with Phillips impressing massively on his competitive debut against Blackburn Rovers.

West Brom insert sell-on clause into Torbjorn Heggem deal

Heggem was signed by West Brom just 13 months ago, arriving from Swedish side Brommapojkarna in a deal worth around £500,000.

And the Norwegian seemed to settle in instantly, registering an assist on his Championship debut.

Heggem would go on to appear in all but one of West Brom’s league fixtures, appearing predominantly in the centre of defence, but often playing on the left, too.

The 26-year-old was awarded supporters’ player of the season and players’ player of the season at the Baggies’ end-of-season awards dinner.

Last season also saw him make his debut for his country, the Norwegian, since taking on a key role in the team in the months since.

West Brom were not unaware of the interest that Heggem would attract this summer, but had their price and were unwilling to shift it.

Bologna’s interest has been well-reported for some time this summer, but it is only now that the Serie A side have finally met that price.

The deal is worth around £6.9million guaranteed, The Athletic reported on 14 August, and could reach around £8.6m with add-ons.

The Baggies have also included a sell-on clause, which will see them profit from any future move Heggem makes.

Torbjorn Heggem deal is strong for West Brom

The loss of Heggem will be difficult to contend with for Ryan Mason.

The Norwegian was West Brom’s standout player last season and a reliable presence in defence. But the fee acquired cannot be argued with either.

The 26-year-old’s departure will likely afford the Baggies significant room within the Profit and Sustainability Rules, allowing them to dip back into the market in the closing weeks of the window.
