West Brom fans swarm social media to blast player who was ‘so poor’ despite win vs Wrexham

West Brom beat Wrexham on Saturday to continue their winning start to the Championship season.

Isaac Price got the scoring underway in the first half, but Lewis O’Brien equalised for the hosts before half-time.

Captain Jed Wallace restored the Baggies’ lead in the 74th minute, firing low and under Danny Ward, before that man again, Price, would add his second and his team’s third.

Sam Smith scored a consolation for Wrexham in the closing stages but it was not enough to prevent West Brom claiming all three points.

Callum Styles ‘nowhere to be seen’ vs Wrexham

Despite West Brom’s victory, one player attracted criticism for his performance, with Baggies fans unimpressed.

Callum Styles is West Brom’s first-choice at left-back, and impressed last season following his move from Barnsley.

But the Hungarian was poor against Wrexham, and was criticised for his role in the home side’s equalising goal.

Kieffer Moore broke down the West Brom right, but Styles was not there to close down the striker and block the cross, instead peeling back into the box.

That left the Welshman with free reign to pick out his man, and O’Brien took full advantage after James McClean’s knock-down.

Baggies fans took to social media to air out their disappointment with the defender, with one describing the left-back as “so poor”.

Another said Styles has to do better going forward, and is “so frustrating”, whilst a further comment exclaimed that “Styles worries me”.

User Wbafcleigh11 voiced his concern over the 25-year-old’s seeming lack of presence for the goal, and said Styles “comes strolling into the box after he’s scored”.

Another criticised Ryan Mason’s tactical usage of the left-back, and said: “I don’t like how Styles inverts into midfield and leaves Grant on his own on the wing”.

But fellow fan Chris Hall disagreed, claiming that the defender “hasn’t had enough support”.

West Brom need competition in defence

Styles remains the only natural option for Mason on the left of the defence, despite the arrival of two defenders at The Hawthorns this summer.

In the weeks remaining of the transfer window, West Brom must look to sign a new option.

Competition should see an improvement in Styles, with complacency likely allowed to slip into his game with the lack thereof.
