Man City fans need to stop peddling ridiculous Morgan Rogers myth as ex-West Brom starlet wins award

West Brom continue to watch from afar as Morgan Rogers goes from strength to strength in the Premier League.

The Aston Villa forward has become one of the country’s most impressive young talents during his time with the club, and his rapid development looks unlikely to slow down any time soon.

Rogers spent time in West Brom’s academy as a youngster and is part of a long list of former Baggies starlets who have gone on to have plenty of success at other clubs.

Man City fans are so wrong as Rogers wins PFA award

West Brom will have been delighted with Rogers after he was handed the PFA’s Young Player of the Year award for the 2024/25 season earlier this week.

There is naturally some regret in B71 that they were unable to keep hold of their talent a few years ago, but that stinging feeling will surely have been replaced with pride after he was rightly recognised for such an impressive season.

The Halesowen-born 23-year-old received the award ahead of strong competition from the likes of Myles Lewis-Skelly and Liam Delap, and became the first ever Baggies academy graduate to claim the gong.

However, the narrative surrounding Rogers’ development is being skewed by Manchester City fans in the aftermath of the ceremony.

Several City fans are peddling the ridiculous myth that the attacker is one of their academy products, and they simply could not be more wrong.

Rogers was part of the youth setup at The Hawthorns for several years before he made his senior debut in the FA Cup as a 16-year-old, before City bought him in the summer of 2019.

The England international had already played senior football before his switch to the Etihad Stadium, so it is hardly fairly for the narrative surrounding his development to be twisted away from West Brom.

West Brom will still have Rogers regrets

West Brom’s regrets over Rogers are totally understandable and will only get worse with every achievement he goes on to make within football.

The Baggies likely had no choice but to cash in on him at the time, as it is hard to deprive a young player of the opportunity of a move to a club like City.

However, had they been able to keep hold of Rogers for just another year or two, his value could have skyrocketed.

The Villa star is now being spoken about as a potential £100million player, and all West Brom can do is watch on and wish they still had a say over him.
