Tony Brown speaks out about Tom Fellows exit, makes ‘behind the scenes’ West Brom claim

Tony Brown has made his feelings known after Tom Fellows departed West Brom.

Southampton had held strong interest in Fellows at West Brom before eventually pulling the trigger on a £10million deal at St Mary’s.

This has seen one of the best players at The Hawthorns move on, within the same week that Darnell Furlong also left West Brom for Ipswich Town.

It has to be said that the loss of Fellows will be felt and has ultimately left supporters feeling let down, just as they did when Tobjorn Heggem moved to Bologna.

With that being said, Brown has been clear on his belief that the only opinion on the sale that matters is that of Ryan Mason in the Black Country.

Ryan Mason accepts Tom Fellows sale

Fans have slammed West Brom for Fellows’ sale figure, given how instrumental the England under-21 international had become in B71.

Given that larger fees than the £10m Southampton paid have been offered in the past, it is a disappointment to sell at that price.

It is only made worse given the level that the 22-year-old had reached last season, becoming a reliable beacon for assists at The Hawthorns.

This has resulted in complaints that Mason will be fuming with the departure, but so far, that hasn’t proven to be the case for the Baggies.

With that in mind, Albion legend Brown has spoken out to suggest that as long as the head coach is happy, the concerns of supporters truly don’t matter.

Speaking on BBC WM on 30 August, he said: “As long as everyone understands what’s going on, we don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes half the time.

“The manager knows, and as long as he’s happy with what’s happening, everything is ok because he’s the main man.”

West Brom will cope with Tom Fellows exit

It may seem to be a kick in the teeth at this stage, but losing the wide midfielder may not prove to be the end of the world for the Baggies.

In the opening games of the Championship campaign, the Englishman is yet to score or assist despite featuring in over 200 minutes under Mason.

As a result, getting the best out of the likes of Mikey Johnston, Isaac Price, and Karlan Grant will now take priority after Fellows’ exit.

He won’t be easy to replace, but with £10m in the bank ready to spend, some shrewd replacement could see fans in B71 quickly forget about the 22-year-old.
