West Brom player ratings vs Stoke City: George Campbell excellent as 5/10 star almost costs his team

West Brom continued their bright start to the season with an impressive 1-0 victory over Stoke City on Saturday.

The Baggies travelled to the bet365 Stadium for an early kick-off, and emphatically ended the hosts’ 100 per cent start to the new Championship campaign.

Nat Phillips netted the only goal for West Brom in the Potteries, and it proved to be enough to claim all three points for the visitors thanks to a commendable defensive effort.

Ryan Mason was serving a suspension for the clash, but he will have been delighted with what he saw from his side, in a game where there were trong performances all across the pitch.

With that in mind, West Brom News rates the performance of every single Baggies player out of 10.

George Campbell an excellent 8/10 vs Stoke City

Chris Mepham’s arrival at West Brom may have concerned George Campbell, but it certainly won’t need to if he keeps turning in performances like the one he put in against Stoke.

The American played slightly out of position at right-back, with new signing Alfie Gilchrist having only completed his move to The Hawthorns on Friday, and he was hugely impressive as his side kept a clean sheet.

Campbell was facing a dangerous combination on Stoke’s left flank in Sorba Thomas and Aaron Cresswell, but he marshalled the duo well all afternoon, and they got little joy down that side across the 90 minutes.

The ability to shut down that threatening left side was always going to be crucial to the Baggies’ fortunes on Saturday, and for that reason, Campbell is deserving of an 8/10 rating for his excellent display.

Callum Styles almosts costs West Brom

Callum Styles has had a mixed start for West Brom this season, and he almost produced a moment that cost his side at the bet365 Stadium.

The Hungary international had a quiet afternoon going forward on the left flank, and almost handed the hosts a route back into the game when he inexplicably opted to try and backheel away a long ball from Tatsuki Seko.

Styles inadvertently knocked the ball straight into the path of Divin Mubama, who struck the post from just inside the area, with the rest of the defence helpless.

It was a frustrating moment from the left-back, who was far from his best across the 90 minutes, and deserving of little more than a 5/10 rating.
