Victor Anichebe and flop forwards — West Brom’s biggest deadline day shockers
Ryan Mason will hope Bilkul Football don’t repeat the errors made over the years at West Brom, with Victor Anichebe a reminder of what could go wrong.
The Baggies have had an eventful summer transfer windows, with some big names exiting but also some exciting talents coming in.
Deadline day has often been a day of high-profile deals, not least at West Brom.
It will now be interesting to see how the final few hours develop as West Brom News look at some of the shocking deadline day deals at The Hawthorns.
Victor Anichebe — Everton to West Brom
Victor Anichebe moved to West Brom from Everton for £6million on 2 September 2013, with fans in B71 thinking they were going to get Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea instead.
The former Nigeria international spent three years at Albion, making just 63 appearances in all competitions and scoring nine goals.
It’s safe to say that the centre-forward will go down as one of the worst deadline day signings in the Black Country outfit’s history.

Adam Armstrong — Southampton to West Brom
Adam Armstrong technically signed for the Baggies after the 2025 winter transfer window closed, but the relevant paperwork for his loan move was submitted just before the deadline.
The 28-year-old reunited with Tony Mowbray at the West Midlands club, but failed to make much of an impact as the English manager ended up being sacked for missing out on a Championship play-offs spot.
The English striker scored on his debut for the Baggies last season but ended up finding the back of the net just three times in 16 league appearances.

Nathaniel Chalobah — Fulham to West Brom
On 31 January 2023, Nathaniel Chalobah signed an 18-month deal at the Baggies for an undisclosed fee after leaving Fulham.
The 30-year-old was mostly a bit-part player at West Brom as Carlos Corberan led the Albion to the Championship play-offs in 2024.
With the Englishman’s contract expiring at the Black Country outfit, he joined Sheffield Wednesday last summer as a free agent.

Marc Albrighton — Leicester City to West Brom
Marc Albrighton moved to The Hawthorns on 31 January 2023 on a short-term loan from Leicester City.
In 17 Championship appearances for the Baggies, the 2015 Premier League champion made zero goal contributions as the West Midlands club finished ninth in the league table.
Fan consensus in B71 would suggest that the 35-year-old didn’t live up to the expectations at the Baggies.

Jacob Murphy — Newcastle United to West Brom
On 31 January 2019, Jacob Murphy signed for West Brom on a temporary basis for the remainder of the campaign.
The 30-year-old was part of the Albion squad that reached the play-off semi-final in 2019, but eventually lost ot Aston Villa on penalties.
In 15 appearances for the Albion, the English forward scored two goals and provided one assist, but was unable to fully convince fans of his talent.

Jefferson Montero is another name on the long list of deadline day loan transfers at The Hawthorns, arriving in B71 on 31 January 2019.
The Ecuador international’s signing ultimately amounted to almost nothing, as he made just four league appearances and wasn’t part of most of the squad lists towards the end of the campaign.
Thievy Bifouma — Espanyol to West Brom
On 31 January 2014, Thievy Bifouma moved to West Brom on an initial loan deal, with a view to making the transfer permanent.
However, after making just six Premier League appearances in the 2013/14 campaign, the Congo international was on his way back to Spain.
The winger didn’t feature in the final seven league games of the campaign as the Black Country outfit just about avoided relegation by finishing 17th.
