West Brom advance on deal to sign player who once went on strike at Leeds United
West Brom are set to take full advantage of the final few hours of the summer transfer window.
Ryan Mason has shocked spectators since West Brom appointed him as head coach. The manager has gotten off to a flying start in the Championship with West Brom’s win over Stoke City extending their unbeaten run.
The Bagges have seen several arrivals at the Hawthorns thus far. Nat Phillips’ arrival at West Brom from Liverpool has been one of the highlights of the window.
But Albion want more. With a title charge in the back of their mind, the Baggies are keen to welcome one more arrival.
West Brom advance on deal for Charlie Taylor
As reported by Alfie House via X on Monday, 1 September, West Brom are advancing on a deal for Charlie Taylor.
Critical hours lie ahead to get the deal done with the defender’s potential move, one to keep an eye on.
Albion are keen to sign another left-back for Mason after Gianluca Frabotta departed West Brom on a free transfer earlier in the window. However, they may need to be wary of their chosen transfer target.
Back in May 2017, Taylor was absent from Leeds United’s draw against Wigan in their final game of the Championship. This was because the fullback, who was out of contract that summer, refused to play.
In quotes provided by Sky Sports on 8 May 2017, former United coach Garry Monk said: “There’s no sugar-coating this – Charlie refused to play the game.
“I think he’s been terribly advised…I think he’s been poorly advised this season.”
The out-of-favour left-back went on to join Burnley on a four-year deal that summer. While Taylor seems to have been better advised since, the ordeal is something Mason may still recall.
What is West Brom’s defensive record in the Championship so far?
West Brom have played four games in the Championship so far this season and are remain unbeaten.
While Mason’s attack has been the talk of the town, defensively, the Baggies have been solid. In the four games, Albion have conceded three goals and have kept two clean sheets.
Goals conceeded | 0.80 per 90 |
xG conceeded | 4.60 per 90 |
Clean sheets | 2 |
Interceptions | 6.80 per 90 |
Clearances | 35.5 per 90 |
Meanwhile, West Brom are third in the league for clearances and 13th for saves per match.
Taylor’s experience will surely add to this sublime defensive effort from Albion. If Mason continues this strong form for the remainder of the season, the Baggies will be looking at a title charge as well as a promotional one.
