West Brom cannot take £4.5m+ gamble on Dele Alli at The Hawthorns

Dele Alli is looking to revive his career after leaving Como, but West Brom will be well served to steer clear.

The 29-year-old has seen his career take a nose-dive since leaving Tottenham in 2022, with the pressure on his shoulders from an early age after breaking through at the North London outfit.

Alli is now being tipped with a move to The Hawthorns, with the Baggies able to sign the free agent outside of the transfer window.

The Albion are undoubtedly in need of a creative outlet after losing Tom Fellows to Southampton in the previous transfer window, however, the England international may not be able to help much.

Dele Alli may demand £90,000 in wages as West Brom should not take gamble

Alli joined Como in an 18-month deal on a free transfer in January 2025, signing a contract worth around £92,000 in weekly wages, as per Capology.

The Italian club decided to part ways with the attacking-midfielder prematurely, releasing him from his contract in September.

Cesc Fabregas didn’t trust the Englishman to be a part of his plans at the Serie A outfit, making just one appearance for them last season.

Alli could potentially demand around £90,000, similar to what he earned at Como, translating to over £4.5million a year at his next possible club, and that’s something the Albion should avoid doing.

Ryan Mason has seen Dele Alli up close at Tottenham

Alli is one of the free agents who could move to The Hawthorns in the coming weeks, and Ryan Mason certainly knows all about him.

The English manager saw the playmaker at his best at Tottenham, spending time together in the 2015/16 season at the North London outfit.

After breaking into Mauricio Pochettino’s team, it looked like the attacking-midfielder would go on to become one of the best players in the Premier League, and he arguably was for a short period.

There’s no doubt that Alli had the potential to become world-class, but he hasn’t lived up to the expectations, and now West Brom have an obvious decision to make in terms of finances at The Hawthorns.

Mason is hoping for Premier League promotion this season, and it looks like he has a solid core of players to help achieve that goal.

Alli’s consistent fitness issues in recent years make him unreliable, and the Albion undoubtedly aren’t in a position to carry someone who may not be able to pull their weight.
