Peter Ridsdale behind major potential Championship change that could impact West Brom

West Brom have made an unbeaten start to the Championship season in what has been an impressive start for Ryan Mason.

West Brom have won three and drawn one of their opening four games and find themselves sitting second in the table.

Mason has been nominated for Manager of the Month in the Championship for his impressive start.

West Brom have promotion firmly in their sights and will look to continue the unbeaten run this weekend.

Baggies fans know there is a long way to go, and if promotion isn’t achieved this season, it may become more difficult in the future.

West Brom could be impacted by major Championsip change

The Championship could soon see a major reform to its play-off structure, which could affect West Brom.

According to The Athletic on 11 September, the EFL are considering adding more teams to the play-offs at the end of the season.

The proposal put forward by Preston North End’s Peter Ridsdale would see teams from fifth to eighth face each other in additional preliminary games.

Teams in third and fourth place would then face the winners of these ties in the play-off semi-finals.

This would mean there are six play-off places up for grabs rather than the traditional four.

SeasonWest Brom Play-off Record
2000/2001Semi-final loss vs. Bolton
2006/2007Final loss vs. Derby
2019/2019Semi-final loss vs. Aston Villa
2023/2024Semi-final loss vs. Southampton
West Brom have struggled in the play-offs

Championship clubs are said to have supported this proposal, according to the report, so it may arrive sooner rather than later – albeit not this season.

West Brom focus on Derby County clash

West Brom welcome Derby to The Hawthorns this Saturday, as they look to extend their unbeaten run.

Mason’s side secured a big win on the road against Stoke City last time out and will want to continue that momentum at home.

West Brom are favourites against Derby, but will be well aware of the threat carried by the visitors.

The Rams did the double over West Brom last season, including a 3-1 victory at The Hawthorns.

A Baggies win on Saturday would signal the intent for Mason and Co. this campaign as they continue their hunt for promotion.
