Ex-referee reacts to Aune Heggebo’s frustrating situation at West Brom after ‘huge error’

Aune Heggebo has been settling into life at West Brom since arriving in the summer.

West Brom signed Heggebo from SK Brann over the summer as part of a vibrant summer transfer window.

Albion also signed Nat Phillips from Liverpool, who has quickly become a fan favourite at The Hawthorns.

While Heggebo has been at West Brom for a short time, he has continued to make headlines at the club.

Referee made ‘huge error’ not awarding penalty vs Portsmouth

Ryan Mason saw red in West Brom’s draw to Portsmouth in the Championship this season.

This came after his furious reaction to what seemed to be an unpunished foul on Heggebo by Regan Poole.

However, moments before, the Baggies were denied a penalty after Connor Ogilvie appeared to trip Heggebo.

Following the foul on Heggebo in the box, ex-referee Keith Hackett – speaking exclusively to West Brom News – believes Albion should have been awarded a penalty.

Heggebo is known to stay on his feet even when contact is made, which goes against the grain of modern-day players in the view of Hackett.

“On this video clip evidence this is a nailed on penalty kick the WBA player clearly fouled, Hackett said.

“The referee made a huge error not awarding a penalty kick. There is no doubt in my mind that over the years coaches have influenced their players to go to ground on the slightest of touches.

“The risk is of course exposure to a yellow card for an act of simulation. A sanction that often referees appear to be reluctant to apply.”

Aune Heggebo yet to score in Championship for West Brom

Heggebo netted for West Brom in their Carabao Cup defeat to Derby County on penalties.

However, he is yet to score for the Baggies in the Championship as he continues a goal drought that is becoming worrisome.

While Price has had a sensational start for West Brom, Mason will no doubt be concerned that his most efficient goalscorer is a midfielder.

With Josh Maja waiting in the wings, Heggebo will need to pick up the pace or risk losing his spot as a starter.
