West Brom fans fuming as Ryan Mason makes major selection decision – ‘I can’t believe my eyes’

Ryan Mason has made a bold decision as part of his West Brom team selection to face Norwich City on Wednesday night.

The Baggies have seen their form dip drastically in recent weeks, as a four-game unbeaten run to start the season has quickly turned into a spell of three Championship games without a win.

West Brom travel to face Norwich City knowing that their hosts are also short of confidence at the moment, having lost all three of their home games so far this term.

With that in mind, it looks set to be a big night for Mason and his men, and the boss has already left some of the fanbase fuming as a result of this decision.

West Brom fans angry as Aune Heggebo dropped for Josh Maja

West Brom fans have been crying out to see Josh Maja receive more minutes, with last season’s top scorer limited to just substitute appearances so far in 2025-26.

The frontman has been recovering from a long-term injury, but with him now back to full fitness, many of the Albion faithful had been expecting him to play a key role for the team.

However, that hasn’t been the case, as Mason has opted for Aune Heggebo to lead the line so far, and to mixed results.

The Norwegian is still settling into English football and hasn’t been prolific in front of goal, although Maja has also come under fire for missing a glaring opportunity to secure all three points in last week’s draw with Leicester City.

Mason has finally caved in and handed the former Sunderland star the opportunity to start against Norwich, but fans are frustrated by his decision to drop Heggebo, despite some of the criticism that he has seen labelled at him at times.

The Baggies faithful took to X to share their frustrations, with one supporter suggesting that they “couldn’t believe their eyes” after learning that Maja was leading the attack.

Josh Maja has to perform vs Norwich City

Everyone at West Brom knows what Maja is capable of, after he notched 12 Championship goals in the first half of the season last term.

His miss against Leicester was indicative of a striker who hasn’t had much football recently, but Mason will be hoping that his desire and hunger to impress can fire him back into form against the Canaries.

The midweek clash will be a big night for the 26-year-old as it is his first real opportunity to impress the new boss.

He could easily play his way into Mason’s plans with a positive showing, but on the other hand, a disappointing display could consign him to the bench for the majority of the campaign.

Heggebo has been a big investment for Albion, and with Mason seemingly keen to start games with just one striker on the pitch, it may take a big effort for Maja to usurp the new arrival.
