Mark Clattenburg reveals James Morrison handed him £100 cash in West Brom win vs Wolves

James Morrison has been part of some memorable moments for West Brom in their derby clashes against Wolves over the years.

The former Baggies midfielder made over 340 appearances for the B71 outfit across a stint spanning over a decade in their colours, and is certainly a cult hero among the fans.

Morrison starred in West Brom’s famous 5-1 win over Wolves back in February 2012, when a Peter Odemwingie hat-trick ensured Albion did the double over their neighbours.

The Scot was part of three victories at Molineux during his time with the club, but he may now be remembered for a different moment, following an eye-catching reveal from former referee Mark Clattenburg.

James Morrison honoured bet with Mark Clattenburg during Wolves clash

Morrison is a firm legend at West Brom for the contributions that he made to the club over the years.

He was a fantastic servant at The Hawthorns across a large chunk of his career, and was part of an Albion team that established themselves as regular mid-table finishers in the Premier League.

The 39-year-old produced several special moments on the pitch during his playing career, but it has now been revealed that he was once involved in a very different incident during a game with Clattenburg.

The former FIFA and Premier League official has admitted that Morrison once handed him £100 in cash during a Black Country derby against Wolves, as part of GOAL’s Beast Mode On Podcast.

Clattenburg explained that the incident occurred as a result of a disagreement between the two regarding a penalty decision in a previous Albion FA Cup quarter-final against Bristol Rovers.

Morrison agreed to a bet with Clattenburg that his decision for the penalty was correct, with £100 the wager between the two.

The ex-official then added that after seeing a replay of the incident, Morrison produced the cash for him midway through a derby against Wolves, which is likely to have been Albion’s 1-0 victory in April 2008, in which Clattenburg had the whistle.

James Morrison may be destined for West Brom manager job

Morrison has remained at West Brom ever since the end of his playing career in 2019, and he has since formed part of the coaching team at The Hawthorns.

The former Scotland international first moved into the backroom team under Sam Allardyce in 2020, and that is a position that he has held ever since.

Morrison had a brief stint as caretaker manager after Tony Mowbray’s dismissal back in April, but dropped back down to his usual role following Ryan Mason’s appointment.

He is clearly a capable coach, and few know Albion inside out like Morrison does.

With that in mind, it would be no surprise at all to see him one day get the top job in B71, even if he has to wait several years for the opportunity.
