Popular ex-West Brom boss now in ‘shock’ running to be next Rangers manager

West Brom have seen several top coaches manage at The Hawthorns, with one now tipped to start a new journey at Rangers.

Mason was criticised for West Brom’s tactical display during Albion’s shock defeat to Millwall before the international break.

But while there is cause for concern, there is also reason to be optimistic about Mason and West Brom’s potential.

However, for once, all eyes are not on the current Albion coach, who still has a lot to prove at The Hawthorns.

Slaven Bilic named as contender for Rangers job

Former West Brom coach Slaven Bilic has been out of a job since he left his position as manager for Saudi Arabian club Al-Fateh in August 2024.

Albion sacked the Croatian after 18 months in charge, despite Bilic guiding West Brom to Premier League promotion the previous season after several disappointing league results.

However, Bilic is now a “shock contender” to become the next Rangers manager after Russell Martin was sacked this week, according to Alan Nixon via his Patreon on 7 October.

It is understood that his case and credentials for the role have been put to the Gers by a prominent figure in football with connections to the Glasgow club.

Bilic was popular among Baggies fans and has worked at the level for most of his career, including stints at West Ham and Watford; thus there is no doubt he will be looking for his next challenge.

Would Slaven Bilic be a good fit for Rangers?

Bilic is best known for his progressive, attacking-minded approach to football, which he has tweaked throughout the years.

The Croatian manager frequently fielded a 4-2-3-1 formation while at Albion, but failed to establish a consistent starting line-up.

One could say that this was part of his undoing at The Hawthorns, with constant rotations meaning players were unable to develop deep connections on the pitch.

More worryingly, this is something Mason has been criticised for while at West Brom. As a result, this will need to be addressed before it becomes detrimental for both him and Albion.

However, Bilic’s West Brom were a side who could average less possession than their opponents but still harm them through purposeful attacking plays.

Rangers have netted just seven goals in the Scottish Premiership this season, with their attackers just itching to get on the other end of some chances.

Therefore, Rangers are a side who clearly need to score goals, and Bilic’s direct attacking approach could be the solution.
