West Brom must ask questions of Josh Griffiths as worrying stat emerges from Millwall defeat

Josh Griffiths has established himself as West Brom’s first-choice goalkeeper this season.

After numerous loan spells, the Baggies academy graduate has finally made his breakthrough under Ryan Mason.

So far this season, the 24-year-old has played nine times, which has resulted in three clean sheets.

Last week, Griffiths was heavily praised for his performance in West Brom’s victory over Norwich City, where the keeper was a star player.

However, this display may have just papered over the cracks.

Josh Griffiths has the sixth-worst goals prevention rate in the Championship

While Griffiths was fantastic against Norwich, many of his other matches left much to be desired.

His worst performance of the season arguably came in the following match, as West Brom lost 3-0 to Millwall

According to Fotmob, the goalkeeper only made one save, and had a goals prevention rate of -1.40.

As a result, he was awarded a 4.80 rating, by far the lowest in the team.

Now, the goalkeeper currently ranks 20th in the Championship for goals prevented at -1.90.

Only six others have a worse ratio, and now, Mason has to be considering Griffiths’ place in the team.

West Brom were reportedly looking to add a goalkeeper in the summer, and now, the manager may be forced to dip into the January market if this worrying trend continues.

How bad has Griffiths been this season?

On top of Griffiths’ goal prevention statistics, plenty of other areas have also been poor.

The goalkeeper has a 61.5 per cent save rate and has only made five high claims.

On a more positive note, Griffiths has proven to be good on the ball, with a 37.5 per cent long ball accuracy.

Griffiths has proved to be inconsistent at West Brom this season

Hopefully, if the keeper is to remain in the net, he can quickly prove to be a more consistent shot stopper to help the Baggies reach the playoffs.
