Jayson Molumby development away from West Brom leaves ex-Birmingham City player baffled
Jayson Molumby has put West Brom’s Championship promotion aspirations to one side as focus switches to Republic of Ireland duty.
Molumby was frustrated by his recent Republic of Ireland snub, but he is back involved for the World Cup qualifiers against Portugal and Armenia over the next week.
While Molumby has been a regular starter for West Brom this season, he was overlooked for his country’s matches in September.
And the fact Molumby is now back involved under Heimir Hallgrimsson has been a big topic of conversation across the Irish Sea.

Gary Breen questions Heimir Hallgrimsson squad decision
Molumby will hope to play a part when Republic of Ireland face Portugal in Lisbon on Saturday evening.
West Brom were beaten 3-0 by Millwall in Molumby’s most recent match, so he will certainly be hoping for a different outcome this weekend.
The fact Molumby is back part of the squad, with seemingly no explanation as to why he was left out to begin with, has left former Birmingham City defender Gary Breen confused.
“It’s a genuine question to ask why a top Championship performer at a good club was discarded,” Breen wrote in his column for Friday’s print edition of The Herald.
“Equally, I must ask why Heimir has suddenly decided to bring him back. Jason Knight’s injury is the short answer, but Killian Phillips was preferred to Molumby last month and came off the bench in Yerevan and he isn’t in the squad at all.”
Breen went on to ask “why was he pushed out the picture?” in a question many Republic of Ireland fans are also no doubt asking.
Should Molumby indeed featured, everyone at West Brom will simply be hoping he comes through the game unscathed.
That was the case for Chris Mepham, who featured for Wales in their loss to England on Thursday night at Wembley.
Where does Jayson Molumby rank among most-used West Brom players?
Molumby has started all nine of West Brom’s Championship games this season, but he has not played the most minutes.
Indeed, the Irishman’s 793 minutes on the field is bettered by Nat Phillips and Josh Griffiths, who have each played all 810 minutes so far.
Player | Minutes |
Josh Griffiths | 810 |
Nat Phillips | 810 |
Jayson Molumby | 793 |
Isaac Price | 757 |
Aune Heggebo | 732 |
Fourth on the list is Isaac Price on 757 minutes, with Aune Heggebo rounding off the top five on 732 minutes of league action under Ryan Mason.
Heggebo is the only member of that list not to start every game, having come on as a substitute in one of them.
