Irish media in agreement over West Brom’s Jayson Molumby after his display in win vs Armenia

West Brom star Jayson Molumby concluded his international break by playing 90 minutes in Ireland’s 1-0 win over Armenia on Tuesday.

The Boys in Green have had a torrid qualifying campaign so far, but Evan Ferguson’s 70th-minute strike handed them their first victory and kept their hopes of qualification alive.

Molumby is a key player for West Brom, having started all nine of their Championship games so far, and he has gained similar importance for his country, playing 90 minutes in both of their games this time around.

The midfielder has been one of several stars to have featured for their countries away from The Hawthorns over the last week, and his display had the Irish media in agreement following the Armenia victory.

Jayson Molumby frustrates for Ireland vs Armenia

Molumby’s recent displays for West Brom have been strong so far this season, and he appeared to have carried that over effectively into international football, as he was heavily praised for his showing against Portugal.

However, it was not the same story against Armenia, as a laboured performance from the hosts at the Aviva Stadium saw them edge past their lower-ranked visitors, despite them playing against 10 men from the 52nd minute.

Molumby featured heavily in the midfield during the clash, but there has been a recurring theme among the media that his performance could have been better.

RTE handed the Baggies star a 6/10 match rating and highlighted the way that he struggled to “work his forward in any meaningful way.”

The Irish Times also viewed Molumby as being worthy of a 6/10 rating, adding that he “worked his socks off,” and “tried to get into useful positions all night.”

However, Sports Joe.ie were slightly less lenient on the former Brighton man, highlighting that his efforts were “all too seldom,” despite acknowledging that he never shied away from the ball.

The Albion man also picked up a crucial booking during the game, which means that he will miss Ireland’s penultimate qualifier against Portugal on 13 November.

Jayson Molumby is undroppable for West Brom

Molumby’s importance has grown at West Brom over recent seasons, and he is now a vital presence in the middle of the park.

The 26-year-old is far from the most flashy or eye-catching player, but he keeps things ticking over and breaks up the play well when needed. He has also formed an effective partnership with Alex Mowatt at the heart of the team.

He is certainly the kind of player who goes under the radar, given his fairly consistent performances, and fans only truly realise what they are missing when he isn’t in the team.

That is exactly what Ireland have to contend with next month, and Ryan Mason will be hoping that he doesn’t have to for quite some time.
