The stats that reveal what Ryan Mason is doing better than Carlos Corberan at West Brom

West Brom fans will arguably be growing sceptical of Ryan Mason’s methods this season.

Ipswich Town defeated West Brom 1-0 on 25 October in a loss that has once again left many questioning their ability to perform at the top level.

Mason has previously been criticised for Albion’s performances, and the defeat at Portman Road has made it just two wins in their last five Championship games.

This is a poor record for Mason, who was predicted to earn Premier League promotion only a couple of weeks ago. As a result, something will need to change, and it will need to be done soon.

Ryan Mason has won six points to Carlos Corberan’s four last October

Carlos Corberan departed West Brom last season to manage Valencia after a difficult start to the Championship season.

While there were similarities between the two coaches, there is one difference between Mason and Corberan, which could convince Baggies’ fans to give their current coach a little more time.

At this point last season, Albion had earned 20 points, while they are currently on 17 as it stands. However, Mason has picked up six points in October, while Corberan ended the month with four.

The difference between the two coaches at this point of the season is that Mason is still winning games. Indeed, the current Valencia coach went on to draw 10 and lose one after drawing to Millwall on 5 October 2024.

There is no doubt that Mason will need to make some tactical tweaks, but it may be a few more months before all the pieces fall into place.

It cannot be another year of simply falling away; they need to get stronger as the season goes on.

Ryan Mason will need to improve West Brom’s attacking intensity

One of Mason’s biggest criticisms this season has been Albion’s mediocre attacking sequences in the Championship.

Strikers Josh Maja and Aune Heggebo have both been relied upon by their coach this season.

However, Maja has scored one goal in 232 minutes played, while Heggebo has netted two in 906 minutes in the Championship.

These are unacceptable numbers, but West Brom have only recorded 12.6 expected goals, which is one of the lowest in the league.

As a result, Mason will need to figure out how to both make his team more lethal in front of the goal and create opportunities for his attackers.
